7th Annual Meeting of ESIN
21 August 2007

The 7th Annual Meeting of the European Small Islands Federation will take place from the 4th – 6th September on the Island of Hydra, Greece.   The meeting is being hosted by the Hellenic Small Islands Network.  For information, follow the link at the bottom of the page.

About Hydra
Hydra is an island of natural wild beauty approximately 4 miles wide and eleven miles long situated in the Sarconic Gulf.   The main settlement on the island is Hydra port which is built around and inside a horseshoe shaped cove which is surrounded by huge rocks. It is characterised by stairways and the white-washed town which crawls up along the mountainside.    There are no cars on the islands since the land is too steep and the streets too narrow and the transportation of people and goods are by donkey and mule.   The population of the island is approximately 3000 persons.   Hydra is named after it plentiful waters.  Historically a service station for the Greek navy, sea commerce has long been associated with it.   Hydra can also lay claim to one president, at least 5 prime ministers and many more hero’s.   In the past it has been synonymous with fishing and sponge collection, an activity which has almost come to a total decline.   Since the 50’s and 60’s it has been discovered by artists and producers of movies and today tourism is one of the main activities of the island economy.   More information can be found at www.hydra.gr
