"The Scale Matters – Quality Counts declaration has been a huge success. So far, 168 organisations from 18 EU member states, and beyond, support it. After we launched the declaration last Monday, we took it into the EU Parliament and in the course of two days we presented it to over 30 MEPS, before it was read out in Parliament during the hearing on small-scale and coastal fisheries by John O’Brien, an artisanal fisher from an island off the west coast of Ireland.

On Wednesday the declaration was presented to Commissioner Damanaki . Throughout the three days the declaration was covered in the media across the EU: in the European Voice, in France, in Italy, fishnewseu.com, in Malta, and in Spain.
We will continue to use our joint declaration in the upcoming advocacy efforts and hope that it will also help you to raise your voice in the CFP reform process. "

European Small Islands want to stay alive !

The Federation of the Small European Islands is the fruit of a rich cooperation between island communities. Since May, 2001, ten national organizations representing small islands decided to meet within a network. The main objective of ESIN is to help the island communities to remain alive and active all year round.
The General assembly of European Small Islands Federation ( ESIN) took place September 14th and 15th on the Ile d'Yeu.
During this assembly two ideas of projects were born :

The first one(night), to develop the exchanges of young people through the European islands so that these last ones can know the other young islanders, another culture, another island lifestyle...

The second idea appeared while the European had an electric motor car for their travel(movement) on the island. This experience(experiment) created the idea to create a working group and to develop this mode of travel(movement) on the islands of member countries

Next ESIN AGM should take place in Scotland in September, 2012.

Jean Yves Le Drian, President of Brittany (France) is the new President of the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR). He was elected during the 38th CPMR General Assembly held on 29, 30 September and 1st October 2010 in Aberdeen (Scotland, UK) at the invitation of Peter Stephen, Lord Provost of Aberdeen City Council and Bill Howatson, Provost of Aberdeenshire Council.
Just after his election, the new President highlighted the top challenges of his mandate : “The key policy areas will be cohesion policy, as this is what will help us to develop our assets, and maritime policy which is the root of our identity. However, concentrating on these issues does not mean excluding other areas for action: I will particularly focus on further developing the policy area of accessibility which has not yet reached a level that fulfils our expectations.”

A net based teaching and learning project is looking for island partners

Three small Danish islands are preparing a project on a teaching cooperation programme based on distant teaching and learning. The programme includes teaching in English and Science based on three lessons a week.

The project has received financial support from the Danish Small Islands Local Actiongroup (LAG).

Its purpose is to keep, upgrade and create more job possibilities on the islands and hold on to and attract children families.

Its aim is also to hold on to the young ones in the local community by making them experts in distant learning. A qualification which opens to college/university education based on net teaching and also to hold / create distant work on a national and global scale.

The project is carried out by a network of teachers at different schools. The teacher acts both as local teacher in relation to his/hers own school and net teacher in relation to the distant school.

During the project the teachers develop learning material and teaching methods. Learning material will be made available for download at a website thus making it accessible for a wider circle.

The project is looking for island partners in European countries. If you are interested contact Morten Priesholm, who is the coordinator of the Danish island LAG: mp@aktionsgruppe.dk and www.aktionsgruppe.dk/english
